I have always been fascinated by the mystery and immensity of the universe, and where I fit into it. I draw on the intersections between science, philosophy, mythology and religion to explore humanity’s relationship with the cosmos, and man’s pursual of transcendence from this earthly realm. Through my art I aim to connect with a higher plane than this physical experience, but in order to connect with the universe, I need to explore the essence of life, and ask what it means to be human.
it’s been important for me to look at breath during the past year. The continual cycle of breathing that is an essential part of human existence and our life-force-energy, but it has become the carrier of a disease that is killing so many millions of people all over the world. Through different ways of printing the breath I have transformed it into a microcosm of the macrocosm, the universe is captured within a breath; bacteria become stars, and water vapour entire galaxies. The air we breathe is alive, drawn within us to animate our bodies, the same air has been breathed by the entirety of humanity, it is the essence of life.
