Playful mark making and drawing chiefly from the landscape provides the starting point for much of my work. The rugged Cornish landscape; the edge between land and sea; and Cornwall’s mining history, especially around where I live all inspire. I’m as much (if not more) interested in what is under the surface and hidden, as well as visible. When embarking on a drawing or painting, I don’t want to set my course to a determined destination, and then successfully arrive there. I like detours, unexpected turns and impulsive directional decisions. A drawing or a painting is a journey.
