I like to play with the texture and physicality of the painting and the painted surface by creating paintings that are objects. For this exhibition, I have hung three painted wasps nests in my window, which I made from handmade recycled paper. Inspired by what is around me, I am currently painting indoor scenes and over-familiar objects. Alongside an interest in interiors and inner space, I am eternally mystified by the architectural genius of wasps and bees. Frustrated by their nests’ unknowable interiors, I painted scenes from my own home’s interior onto the paper imitations I have made, exploring juxtapositions between human and insect home, familiarity and haunting strangeness.
