MOY WESTON
TOAST, 18 CHURCH STREET
I’m primarily a painter focusing on the transience of life, memento mori iconography and macabre imagery. My work is made with the incentive of reminding viewers of their mortality; a natural mystery that brings us all to the same end. Confronting the last frontier of living can put the rest of our brief time into perspective. The imagery is an opportunity to be confronted by mortality; to have an intimate encounter with our thoughts on life and death. My work is deliberately ambiguous, and holds little meaning except for its foundation of memento mori – this is to anchor the viewers thoughts on death, while allowing their own imagination to ponder the subject. Inspired by the chiaroscuro cultivated by Baroque and Renaissance masters, the paintings are sculpted out of tone using oils, and attempt to represent the macabre in their natural beauty.
